Concussion and Head Injury Statement of Intent

Muaythai GB (MTGB) clearly recognises the risks to its members which can be brought about by Concussion and Head Injuries (CHI). The subject of concussion and head injuries is common in discussion in Muaythai as well as other martial arts as it is within many other sports e.g. rugby and football. It is a high-profile media topic with potential for not only lasting injury to members but also reputational issues for the sport which could have global implications on the sports participation.

The UK Government, through the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is playing a leading role in concussion through its Report on Concussion in Sport of December 2021. Likewise, other martial arts federations and governing bodies like Taekwondo Britain have introduced some strong policies, procedures and processes through competition rules and their medical codes.

The MTGB board of directors and committee members wish to raise awareness of the latest science around concussions and to shift the conversation away from fear and silence toward one of knowledge and empowerment. MTGB aims to publish its own policies to reflect those aligning with the UK DCMS and best practices from across sports bodies. Should MTGB gain membership of an international federation in the future we will also ensure that we align with their policies and guidance.

MTGB wishes to further educate, protect, and manage concussion and head injuries for all its members, whether they be elite or amateur athletes or general club/gym members. We will employ resources to establish necessary policies and review them, to improve where needed and to introduce further initiatives and measures to protect our members. The MTGB approach will be one of continual improvement based on adopting or emulating any best practice or any legislation or rules.
